Gangwon-do announced on the Feb. 26th that it has signed a business agreement with the WisCNano Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to cooperate in setting a specialized complex for the bio national-high-tech strategic industry.

The two sides held a business agreement ceremony at the Gangwon Provincial Government afternoon in the day and promised to cooperate in policy and technology exchanges and support for companies and institutions to setting bio-specialized complexes.

In addition, starting with this agreement, it plans to discover and promote linkage cooperation between universities, institutions, and companies located in the Gangwon-do and Wisconsin.

Established in 2018 to revitalize joint research on nanopharmaceuticals, develop preclinical drugs, and foster research personnel, the WisCNano Center is run by 11 faculty members, including Professor Seungpyo Hong, Ph.D., Milton J. Henrichs Chair in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and an adjunct professor at College of Pharmacy at the Yonsei University.

Capio Biosciences Korea, a company founded by Professor Seungpyo Hong, Ph.D., joined hands with Hongcheon-gun in December last year to move its headquarters in An-yang, Gyeonggi-do to Hongcheon National Antibody Cluster.

The Gangwon-do expects to expand the base of biopharmaceutical research in the province by jointly utilizing the manpower and equipment of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which is the sixth largest in the U.S. research and produced 20 Nobel Prizes, and actively promoting technology exchanges.

Chung Kwang-yeol, deputy governor of the economy, said, “The business agreement with the WisCNano Center has completed the bridgehead for Gangwon Bio to spread to the world,” adding, “We will set a specialized complex for the bio national-high-tech strategic industry, so that Gangwon-do can become a new base for R&D like the Wisconsin Cluster, one of the world’s top three R&D areas in the bio sector.”
